Walt Pierce
Pilot & Team Manager
When a thunderous sounding Stearman bi-plane with the name, “WALT PIERCE” painted on the side comes to an airport take note. Chances are 100% that sitting in the cockpit is the daring pilot himself. His full time job is that of a barnstormer, which includes flying Ol' Smokey from location to the next airfield mid-week.
We normally head out after a working weekend and have traveled up to 2000 miles in a week in the 100 MPH Stearman bi-plane. Many people who have been around old vintage airplanes find that unbelievable. The ability to do that comes from years of experience as a pilot as well as being able to fix and repair mechanical problems on the road.
About our Pilot in Command...
Located inside of the airplane is where the modern-day equipment that supports the business of barnstorming can be found. A cell phone and email box included. This gear rides along with a 5-gallon engine oil can and a 20-pound bag of tools.
The stops for fuel have always been a highlight for Walt Pierce as they are planned out to visit with some of the hundreds of contacts and friends he has made over the years across North America. Since his teen years, the airfields are as far as Walt needs to go in finding entertainment.
Once the Stearman arrives at show site, Walt Pierce is at work with air show promotions. From working with the media, to pulling the audience’s attention skyward to follow the trail of billowing smoke as the lady wing walker(s) meticulously moves along the wings of the fierce bi-plane, through post-performance autograph time.
Walt Pierce and his Lady Wing Walker(s) have performed in 42 states, Canada, the Bahamas, Jamaica and Mexico.
A little more about Walt's early days as highlighted by author Marc Williams...
Many folks in the airshow business can attest to the fact that Walt Pierce has influenced their lives over his 40+ years in the industry. He has also made a positive impact in the lives of people who simply love to fly. Marc R. Williams, author of "For the Love of Flight" (© 2007), tells of how in 1967 Walt helped him begin to regain his self-esteem which had been compromised by some of his emotional and learning disabilities, including dyslexia and ADD. In early 2008, Marc surprised Walt when he sent him an autographed copy of his book. Later in 2008, Marc & Walt reunited and Marc asked Walt to write the Intro to the 2nd Edition of his book.
